Something a little different.
Hey all! So I've been pretty quiet on this blog, but I've still been making new things and posting them over at The Third Wyrd. Here's something new that I had some fun with. Going back to some experimenting with watercolors again and having a blast.
Also- Matt- great seeing your Lovecraft piece over at Tor.com!

This is madness (incarnate)!!
Howdy y'all. My illustration teacher this year has been giving crazy deadlines that are definitely helping me work faster. We took reference photos of each other during class and the homework for the next day was to make something cool out of the ref. So my buddy became a Cthulhu idol. I'm pretty happy that I managed to pump this out in 6 hours the night before it was do, but it definitely still has a lot that it needs done to it so any crits would be great.

Help me Tasty Paint Kenobi, you're my only hope...
Hey Ya'll, roll by my blog, I'm imploring the public at large to crit my coloring because I feel so deprived from the opinions of others, seriously, I miss crits so much, don't know what you got 'till it's gone I guess. Anyway, I know I don't know a whole lot of you but your opinions are still important to me and if you have a free minute set it aside to rip me a new one because I'm pretty uncertain about where to go with these.

Cuz I wanna be a cow-boy bay-beeeee!!!!!
Alright so im probably gonna do a little bit more for the space mechanic piece. Mainly just adding more dirt and such, but for now i needed a break from it and decided to completely revamp a piece people are kind of lukewarm about. So far here is what i got...
The story is that this guy just rode up to this house or barn that is burning which will be the source of the warm light. We cant see the house because its off the frame to the right so i need to add things to show that this is the front yard of some sort of structure that is in fact on fire. Don't know how exactly im going to do that without killing the composition. Im thinking i might also add his trusty dog who is reacting to the fire (probably barking) just to the right of the horse looking in the same direction as the guy.
Anyway, as much as I like the fact that I'm improving my pieces, i really wish i was better last year when i made them so i didn't have to do this. I feel like one year shouldn't have made this much of a difference in ability. If you guys have any input about anything that can help, let me know. I'd love to hear it.
I added some more space on the right to give his gaze some breathing room, and worked out the details from his waist up and lightened everything so it can be seen better. The biggest thing so far is the rework of the horse who's just blocked in so far but is a far better representation of a horse then the siamese cat horse in the old version.

Space Mechanic Rework
So after a year of having created this, i went to comic con and got alot of criticism. so i went back and reworked it. Its kind of crazy the difference one year can make in ability. Let me know what you think. The old one's on the left and the new one's on the right.

Definitely NSFW
Wow, how about that, the laziest fucker out all of you with back-to-back posts, ten points please. Anyhow, I didn't come here to gloat about how I'm the most productive, best looking and kindest to animals of all of us, I came to post a link to my new post, it's all about porn so don't check it out at work or church or your grandparents 60th anniversary picnic. It's nothing particularly gross but if you get offended easily I recommend skipping it, I am interested in what you think though even if it's to complain about your virgin eyes being deflowered.
So, ummmmmmmm, here's the link, http://jakemakesdrawing.blogspot.com/2009/08/definitely-nsfw.html
Okay, good talk, meet me at the car in five? Sounds good!
best,
Jake

Oh and does anyone know a good industrial sized scanning place that's not those vultures over at Duggal?

Sketchy's and WIP
Been taking care of my survival skills for a while, such as driving, moneys, and preparingforthezombieapocalypse so I haven't able to art as much *weep*
But now those have been taken care of, here are some things I did/am doing recently.
I've been going to drawing sessions at Dr. Sketchy's NYC..
And also some BW value studies/thumbnails of environments I'm working on; trying to figure out values and lighting while getting proper ref pictures. For the first time ever.
Which I *will* finish.
Must. be. productive ...

1st craft fair
I just had a booth last Sunday at the Hicksville Street Fair selling prints and portraits. Here's a couple pics of my signs in progress (that's my lil sis helping out) as well as my 1st attempt at setting up a booth. Any comments or critiques would be GREATLY appreciated because I'm doing another show this coming Sunday in the Hamptons and I want to look like I have my shit together for that crowd lol

Plein Air
Hey all!
Here's a repost from my Third Wyrd blog.
So the first I did in about 1.5 hours while my good friend and very awesome model, Kate, (who you might recognize from my 'Eleanor' series) sat for me. She was a sport, and introduced me to the best ever dumpling place after that session.
This one was done a week and a half ago on a very overcast day at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. It took about 3.5 hours total and was quite a pleasure despite the chilliness. I chose this angle to do something different, and I liked the way the trees framed the angel perfectly.
That's all for now! The next plein air pieces will most likely be done in Prospect Park, only 2 blocks from my new apartment! So any of you Brooklyn folks who want to come paint with me, please get in touch! It's always easier to take bathroom breaks when you have a buddy.

Attempted Art Order Submission: Exchange
Well son of a bitch, I can't seem to get anything right. So I spent the day finishing up my render for the art order challenge, only to finish and see that the deadline was at noon PST, oops. Oh well, I sent it to them anyways, six and a half hours late, doubt it will get put up, but I figure I might as well give it a try. Oh and I just realized I forgot to give them my website address. *sigh* I need a swift kick in the ass.
Anywho on to the important stuff! As some of you might have notice, I took one of Andrew's figures from the previous challenge to render it up. I started coloring it in the more traditional sense in photoshop, but I was not getting it quite to the level that I would've preferred. So I went back and started playing around with textures and blending options and it gave me something alot more acceptable. I kind of like the overall feel that I got out of this. The earthtones I thought worked out well with the design of the character. In the end I guess I'm satisfied with it.
Any crtits would be appreciated.
Edit: Oh, hey, it got put up on art order, joy.

plein air painting anyone?
...Because there are no classes concerning this at school (which I think is a very grave mistake on SVA's part), and the few times I've done it on my own I got too hungry, bored and ended up spending the remainder of my "painting" time eating and doing something else that wasn't painting. Plus this is a great way to keep in touch/keep our skills going.
Just an idea I'm throwing out. Would be nice to find some people willing to go painting outside/sketching/doodling with... sorta like Sketchcrawl.

Dwarves are cool
So I failed to give myself enough time to complete the latest art order challenge. I was going to do a series of dwarvish armor, but alas life got in the way (which is odd since I've been under the assumption that I lack one). So as a punishment (reward) for myself I'm taking one of the designs I had made up and am going to take it further into an illustration. I figure this will be a good opportunity to work up an action piece which I think my portfolio seriously lacks.
In anycase above is the sketch that I worked up. I 'm kind of unsure of the formatting of it or the placement of the character (I think he should be more to the right but that would be cutting off his foot) but any crits or comments at this early stage would be appreciated.

Deva Battle!
Just as Ruth posted, here are my versions of the Deva! Although, I gotta give you props Ruth for getting some color on yours. Mine are definately a bit drab in comparison. Pretty sure you've got my vote- great job!
I hope to get some color onto mine this week just to beef them up as portfolio pieces. Wasn't this a fun challenge? I am actually considering one of your silhoettes for next week. ;)
Good luck!

Art Order: Variations on a theme
My take on different types of armor for the Deva - forArtorder's Concept Tuesday challenge.
For this, I looked at persian and japanese armor (as they described), and decided to add a touch of Indian, Balinese/Indonesian influences as well.
Not as finished as I hoped and didn't pay attention to the values till later, but this just means I'll have to paint and research faster.
Thumbnail sketches can be found here:
If you like the piece, please vote for me at Artorder's Concept Tuesday, and help me achieve 15 minutes of interweb fame! (don't forget to leave your name, as they're no longer taking anonymous votes)
Crits and comments are always appreciated, anything I can do improve my indentured servitude to that nameless otherworldly beast called Art! :)

Art order : The usual suspects
Hello all, I'm FINALLY posting here, through all the flurry of May activities.... And finally managed to squeeze in some art too! This is my entry for the Artorder concept challenge for this week, silhouettes for the Striker, Defender, Controller and Leader. Not sure how this weeks stuff is going to roll but if there is indeed voting, please vote for me! =D
I'm also doing the conceptart.org IDW and Artorder's other challenge (Variations on a theme) too... hopefully I can finish those as well!
Okay. Time to go grab large amounts of coffee and work. work work work.

Devolved Gnome
Hey all!
So I did this week's concept Tuesday challenge over at Artorder and wanted to share the results. The challenge was to devolve a Gnome from the 4th edition D&D manual and here are the results:
If you like it, please go over to ArtOrder.Blogspot.com and vote for me!

Videeeooo
Well, Jen's on vacation until the middle of next week, so it's just me and her cat, Stella, sitting around the apartment. I decided to make a short intro to a fake TV show about our adventures. You can watch it below:

Island Hopping
Alright, So I just got onto this blog, it would only be appropriate for me to actually contribute something. I just got this drawing done over the course of this past week. A challenge offered by the head of our department to do an illustration specifically for the portfolio book. While working on it, I found it to be a fairly adequate analogy for where we are all at, with graduation and (finally) departing from school after so long.
And crits and/or comments will be much appreciated.

Jubilation Lee
This was a personal commission-- the first time I got asked to make fanart for anyone, and it was SUPER fun. I didn't really grow up reading xmen but Jubilee seems pretty cool-- the only request the commissioner really had was that I use zhang ziyi as a reference for her face, which is sweet because I think she's gorgeous.
Anywaysssss it was nice to do something that I could just sort of have fun with, it's been a while since I just drew a figure and nothing else. fun fun fun.
