Island Hopping

Alright, So I just got onto this blog, it would only be appropriate for me to actually contribute something. I just got this drawing done over the course of this past week. A challenge offered by the head of our department to do an illustration specifically for the portfolio book. While working on it, I found it to be a fairly adequate analogy for where we are all at, with graduation and (finally) departing from school after so long.

And crits and/or comments will be much appreciated.

  1. Awesome drawing mike, great little subtleties all over the place. I kinda wish there was a little bit more tension on that right foot he's standing on, but I really have no idea how you would do that.

    Great job though

  2. Charming is the word that comes to mind looking at this. Great story and atmosphere.

Think about what Peter would say about it though, Value structure. Right now the birdcage at the top is competing with the face for the most attention. Id say a bringing up the contrast just a little bit around the face and lightening up the birdcage as if the light was bending around it and kind of blowing out the exposure on the top. Check out the way the light eats at the edges of these people in this photo

Both of those things together will give you a nice heierarchy of contrast and give you the opportunity to add a cool atmospheric effect.

I also agree with ricardo if you show protruding tendons on the foot it would add tension and make it loog more like a weight bearing foot.
