This past summer I received my first freelance book illustration job, and it was quite a doozy. I was hired by Rodrigo Corral Design to illustrate Jay-Z's memoir Decoded which just hit bookshelves on 11/16/10. All in all I did 23 illustrations, 14 of which made it to print. Here are some of the originals next to their respective pages in the book. All of these were done in graphite.

Hey Guys,

About two weeks ago I met up with Alex Cutler, to talk about making a
promotional Comic for the film PIG written and directed by Henry Barrial.
The deadline was a tight one and everybody involved in the project
seemed to have pulled an all nighter at some point or another, but we managed to pull it off.
Needless to say I am very happy with the result and it was a lot of fun to work on.

So working on a last minute job, got to squeeze in some stuff while waiting for feedback from the AD.

Rework on my robot piece based on sal and peter's advice. still gotta get reference for the boy. I think the robot will be called the bully smasher 5000.

Also a sketch for a new piece I want to do in an attempt to help procure some work from my favorite card game as a kid. Athena leading an army of Spartans to defend their land while wielding her aegis. I thought it would be cool if medusa's head was affixed to the shield by stretching her snake hair around the shield and her mouth will just kinda hang open.

Anyway, for the past couple of months I've been working on stuff that I'm not allowed to post here yet. But I've had 2 days where I'm waiting for the art director to get back to me on my sketches so I snuck in this sketch for a piece I've been meaning to do for years. I want it to be awesome, so please feel free to tear it apart.

Just before posting this I've decided that I want to make the robot already alive but still almost completely devoid of any knowledge and just realizing hes not finished. Probably looking in bewilderment at his missing hand. or the missing power button where his belly button would be. That to come.

Been attempting environments because for whatever reason, I'm sick of drawing people and I need to get out of this self-imposed rut I've put myself in.
It's supposed to be some underwater command center or something..

Hey Everyone thanks for all the comments on my last post. That piece was just a sample i did and finished just in time for spectrum. I need to be done with it for right now and move on, but I'll probably come back to it and do all the things you guys suggested soon.

Anyway i made a new post so all of you who use a program to monitor the blog would see it. I'm a part of www.ohger.com, which is like the site www.drawger.com but for up and coming artists rather than well known professionals and its still really new. The people who get in have to be voted on by the people who are already members.

This unfortunately means that sometimes there's some idiots voting down a lot of good people and I'm starting to think its because they don't want people who are better than them on the site. There's a much better chance of getting on if you're invited by an existing member.

So I want to extend invitations out to everyone on here who wants one. If the site takes off it could be really cool and a good way to be seen. You guys probably know a couple people on the site already like Francis Vallejo (he seems like a cool guy but it gets under my skin that hes so famous already...) Anyway, shoot me an email or a comment on this post and ill set up an invitation for you.

And keep posting on Tasty Paint! We got a good thing going here and its seemed to whittle down to only a few people posting. I think back to how awesome it was in Sal's class and sometimes it makes me sad. Miss you guys.

Howdy y'all. My illustration teacher this year has been giving crazy deadlines that are definitely helping me work faster. We took reference photos of each other during class and the homework for the next day was to make something cool out of the ref. So my buddy became a Cthulhu idol. I'm pretty happy that I managed to pump this out in 6 hours the night before it was do, but it definitely still has a lot that it needs done to it so any crits would be great.

Alright so im probably gonna do a little bit more for the space mechanic piece. Mainly just adding more dirt and such, but for now i needed a break from it and decided to completely revamp a piece people are kind of lukewarm about. So far here is what i got...

I added some more space on the right to give his gaze some breathing room, and worked out the details from his waist up and lightened everything so it can be seen better. The biggest thing so far is the rework of the horse who's just blocked in so far but is a far better representation of a horse then the siamese cat horse in the old version.

The story is that this guy just rode up to this house or barn that is burning which will be the source of the warm light. We cant see the house because its off the frame to the right so i need to add things to show that this is the front yard of some sort of structure that is in fact on fire. Don't know how exactly im going to do that without killing the composition. Im thinking i might also add his trusty dog who is reacting to the fire (probably barking) just to the right of the horse looking in the same direction as the guy.

Anyway, as much as I like the fact that I'm improving my pieces, i really wish i was better last year when i made them so i didn't have to do this. I feel like one year shouldn't have made this much of a difference in ability. If you guys have any input about anything that can help, let me know. I'd love to hear it.

1st craft fair

I just had a booth last Sunday at the Hicksville Street Fair selling prints and portraits. Hey all!
Here's a repost from my Third Wyrd blog.

So the first I did in about 1.5 hours while my good friend and very awesome model, Kate, (who you might recognize from my 'Eleanor' series) sat for me. She was a sport, and introduced me to the best ever dumpling place after that session.

This one was done a week and a half ago on a very overcast day at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. It took about 3.5 hours total and was quite a pleasure despite the chilliness. I chose this angle to do something different, and I liked the way the trees framed the angel perfectly.

That's all for now! The next plein air pieces will most likely be done in Prospect Park, only 2 blocks from my new apartment! So any of you Brooklyn folks who want to come paint with me, please get in touch! It's always easier to take bathroom breaks when you have a buddy.

Attempted Art Order Submission: Exchange

Well son of a bitch, I can't seem to get anything right. So I spent the day finishing up my render for the art order challenge, only to finish and see that the deadline was at noon PST, oops. Oh well, I sent it to them anyways, six and a half hours late, doubt it will get put up, but I figure I might as well give it a try. Oh and I just realized I forgot to give them my website address. *sigh* I need a swift kick in the ass.

Anywho on to the important stuff! As some of you might have notice, I took one of Andrew's figures from the previous challenge to render it up. I started coloring it in the more traditional sense in photoshop, but I was not getting it quite to the level that I would've preferred. So I went back and started playing around with textures and blending options and it gave me something alot more acceptable. I kind of like the overall feel that I got out of this. The earthtones I thought worked out well with the design of the character. In the end I guess I'm satisfied with it.

Any crtits would be appreciated.

Edit: Oh, hey, it got put up on art order, joy.

plein air painting anyone?

...Because there are no classes concerning this at school (which I think is a very grave mistake on SVA's part), and the few times I've done it on my own I got too hungry, bored and ended up spending the remainder of my "painting" time eating and doing something else that wasn't painting. Plus this is a great way to keep in touch/keep our skills going.

Just an idea I'm throwing out. Would be nice to find some people willing to go painting outside/sketching/doodling with... sorta like Sketchcrawl.

So I failed to give myself enough time to complete the latest art order challenge. I was going to do a series of dwarvish armor, but alas life got in the way (which is odd since I've been under the assumption that I lack one). So as a punishment (reward) for myself I'm taking one of the designs I had made up and am going to take it further into an illustration. I figure this will be a good opportunity to work up an action piece which I think my portfolio seriously lacks.

In anycase above is the sketch that I worked up. I 'm kind of unsure of the formatting of it or the placement of the character (I think he should be more to the right but that would be cutting off his foot) but any crits or comments at this early stage would be appreciated.

Art Order: Variations on a theme

My take on different types of armor for the Deva - forArtorder's Concept Tuesday challenge.

For this, I looked at persian and japanese armor (as they described), and decided to add a touch of Indian, Balinese/Indonesian influences as well.
Not as finished as I hoped and didn't pay attention to the values till later, but this just means I'll have to paint and research faster.

Alright, So I just got onto this blog, it would only be appropriate for me to actually contribute something. I just got this drawing done over the course of this past week. A challenge offered by the head of our department to do an illustration specifically for the portfolio book. While working on it, I found it to be a fairly adequate analogy for where we are all at, with graduation and (finally) departing from school after so long.

This was a personal commission-- the first time I got asked to make fanart for anyone, and it was SUPER fun. I didn't really grow up reading xmen but Jubilee seems pretty cool-- the only request the commissioner really had was that I use zhang ziyi as a reference for her face, which is sweet because I think she's gorgeous.

Anywaysssss it was nice to do something that I could just sort of have fun with, it's been a while since I just drew a figure and nothing else. fun fun fun.

'Cause I'm not. What I am ready for is some Portfolio review. Today I realized that I'm the first person in the entire senior class to get nit-picked by our gracious and oft peacocking chair.
